Mogadishu, February 10, 2025

The Minister of Communications and Technology, Hon. Mohamed Adam Moalim (Somali), officially launched Somalia’s National IPv6 Strategy today, marking a historic milestone as Somalia becomes the first country in Africa to establish a national center dedicated to the development and implementation of the next-generation internet protocol, IPv6.

Speaking at the launch event, Hon. Mohamed Adam, Minister of Communications and Technology (FGS), emphasized Somalia’s commitment to modernizing its telecommunications infrastructure and fostering digital economic growth. He underscored the strategic importance of transitioning to IPv6, noting that it will enhance digital connectivity, improve internet services, and strengthen cybersecurity across the country.

Somalia has now achieved the distinction of being the first African nation to inaugurate a National IPv6 Center, a development that enhances the country’s standing in the global telecommunications sector. The newly established center will serve as a research and training hub, preparing future experts in IPv6 technology and implementation.

During the ceremony, the Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the President of Jamhuriya University signed a formal agreement assigning the university the responsibility of managing the IPv6 center. This agreement solidifies the university’s role in training, research, and public awareness efforts related to the adoption of IPv6 in Somalia.

The National IPv6 Strategy is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Communications and Technology, the National Communications Authority (NCA), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). These institutions have worked together to develop and implement the strategy, with ITU and AFRINIC providing technical and training support to ensure Somalia successfully adopts the new IPv6 framework.

In his closing remarks, Hon. Mohamed Somali, Minister of Communications and Technology (FGS), urged government institutions, telecom companies, universities, and businesses to actively support the implementation of the National IPv6 Strategy, reinforcing Somalia’s ambition to become a leader in modern digital technology.

The launch of this strategy is a significant step towards strengthening Somalia’s digital economy and establishing secure, modern digital infrastructure, positioning the country among the leading nations in global digital transformation.
