The Minister of Communications and Technology of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hon. MP Mohamed Adam Moalim (Somali), officially participated in the WSIS+20 High-Level Meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Minister led a delegation that included the Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA) and Somalia’s Ambassador to Switzerland and Austria, Amb. Khadra Ahmed Ducaale.
The global summit, jointly hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Government of Switzerland, focused on reviewing the progress made since the inception of the WSIS process and shaping a new digital development agenda for the future.
During the opening, global leaders underscored the importance of building inclusive, secure, and sustainable digital societies.
Throughout the event, Minister Somali held high-level bilateral meetings with international organizations and government officials, focusing on enhancing Somalia’s partnerships in the digital sphere.
A key engagement was his productive meeting with Dr. Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of the ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT), where they discussed expanding digital skills programs in Somalia, particularly for youth and civil servants.
Minister Somali also met with his Malaysian counterpart, Hon. Fahmi Fadzil, to exchange insights on digital governance and cybersecurity cooperation. He commended Malaysia’s digital advancement, while Minister Fadzil welcomed Somalia’s digital reforms, acknowledging the country’s efforts to build a resilient digital state.
Additionally, the Minister held an important meeting with Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of ITU, focusing on strengthening Somalia–ITU cooperation. He briefed her on Somalia’s digital policy achievements, including the adoption of the National Digital Inclusion Policy and implementation of the E-Government Strategy.
On the sidelines, the Minister also met with Hon. Ridwaan Abdullahi Bahdoon, Minister of Communications of Djibouti, where they discussed deepening bilateral cooperation in the digital sector.
Minister Somali reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to working closely with ITU and global partners to ensure that digital transformation is sustainable, inclusive, and accelerates public service delivery and development opportunities for the Somali people.
Somalia used this platform to demonstrate its resolve in advancing digital governance, including the development of policies and strategies that ensure inclusive and future-focused digital progress. The Minister’s active participation in WSIS+20 underscores Somalia’s determination to be present at the global digital decision-making table and to shape a better digital future for its citizens.
