Mogadishu, Tuesday, August 7, 2024 — The Minister of Communications and Technology of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hon. Mohamed Adam Moalim Ali (Somali), attended a meeting via video link to discuss the acceleration of the East Africa Regional Digital Integration Project (EA-RDIP). The meeting involved the Ministry of Finance, the World Bank, and other stakeholders. The focus was on addressing potential challenges and expediting the project’s progress. Attendees included the Minister of Finance, Hon. Bihi Imaan Cige, the World Bank’s Head for Somalia, Kristina Svensson, the Director-General of the Ministry of Finance, Suleiman Sh. Cumar, the Director-General of the Ministry of Communications, Abdiaziz Duwane Isaq, along with advisors and other officials.
Minister Soomali outlined the project’s goals and its significance, highlighting its role in enhancing commercial connectivity, border control, and internet integration. He stated, “Since this project operates at both national and regional levels, we are exploring the possibility of extending high-speed internet to other countries to improve our economic infrastructure.”
Minister Bihi praised the Ministry of Communications for its progress on the project compared to other participating countries. Kristina Svensson from the World Bank commended the Ministry’s commitment to the project’s implementation.
The EA-RDIP focuses on advancing modern telecommunications and is managed by the Ministry of Communications and Technology, with funding from the World Bank. The Project Implementation Unit (PIU), which oversees the project, includes representatives working in federal member states and the Banaadir region.
