Mogadishu, July 22, 2024:The Minister of Communications and Technology, Mohamed Adam Moalim Ali (Somali), today inaugurated the consultation for the establishment of the Emergency Internet Security Response Center. This initiative is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing the nation’s internet security, with a particular emphasis on safeguarding critical infrastructures such as communications, finance, and other essential sectors.
The consultation, scheduled to span three days, is attended by the General Director of the National Communications Agency, Mr. Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, the Director of the Cyber Security Agency, Mr. Abdullahi Abdiwahab Hassan, along with key stakeholders from various government agencies, banks, money transfer services, communication and internet companies, electricity providers, universities, civil society organizations, and representatives from the Benadir region.
In his address at the inauguration, Mr. Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, the General Director of the National Communications Agency, stated, “The establishment of the CSIRT team signifies a major advancement in our continuous efforts to secure national infrastructure. This team will serve as the cornerstone of our internet security framework, responding to security incidents, gathering security data, and mitigating risks and vulnerabilities in technology.” He further elaborated on the strategic importance of this initiative.
Minister Mohamed underscored the critical importance of this center during his keynote address. “Given the increasing prevalence of internet attacks globally, the formation of the CSIRT team is both timely and necessary. This center will be instrumental in protecting our digital borders and advancing our economic and national security goals,” the Minister stated.
The primary objective of this three-day consultation is to deliberate on and devise the most effective strategies for establishing the Emergency Internet Security Response Center (CSIRT), thereby bolstering internet security across Somalia.
In conclusion, the Parliament is set to consider the Cybersecurity Law and the Cyber Crime Law, which are anticipated to be foundational to the operations of this newly established center.
