The Minister of State for the Ministry of Communications and Technology, Mr.Ahmed Osman Diriye, and his delegation participated in the Regional Forum on Artificial Intelligence in East Africa, held in Nairobi. This forum brought together Ministers of Communication and Technology from East African governments, alongside UNESCO representatives, to discuss the rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impacts on the future of humanity. The forum aimed to establish a strategic framework for policies and legislation essential for the responsible use of AI.
In his address, Minister Diriye showcased Somalia’s progress in communications, internet broadcasting, and the revision of technology-related policies and laws. He underscored the necessity for East African countries to collaborate in addressing the impacts of AI on society, particularly concerning youth employment.
During the forum, Minister Diriye engaged in discussions with his counterparts and the Head of UNESCO, sharing Somalia’s initiatives in developing internet infrastructure, enhancing cybersecurity, and improving digital skills. He also presented an assessment of AI’s trajectory in Somalia.
The forum concluded with a call for East African nations to strengthen their relationship with UNESCO, focusing on leveraging innovation and digital transformation. It emphasized the importance of developing AI management regulations, updating curricula to enhance knowledge and education, and establishing research centers and robust digital infrastructure.
