Technology Terminology Conference in Somali Language.

Mogadishu, Tuesday, September 17, 2024 – The Ministry of Communications and Technology of the Federal Government of Somalia organized the Technology Terminology Conference in the Somali Language  in Mogadishu, which was officially inaugurated by H.E. Salah Ahmed Jama, Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The conference, aimed at discussing how the Somali language can adapt to the evolving technological landscape and how appropriate terminology can be developed for use in this field, attracted a distinguished audience. Participants included Ministers from the Federal Government, Ministers of Communications from the Federal Member States, the Directorate of Technology from Banadir Regional Administration, the Communications Committee of the Federal Parliament, the Chair of the Civil Society Organizations, representatives from telecommunications companies, as well as scholars and experts specializing in both language and technology.

In their remarks, Professor Abdalla Mansuur, Chair of the Regional Academy of the Somali Language (AGA), and Mr. Ismaaciil Yuusuf Cusmaan, Chair of the Academy of Science, Culture, and Literature, commended the Ministry for convening this conference, highlighting the long-standing need for a dedicated terminology for technology in the Somali language.

The Minister of Communications and Technology, H.E. Mohamed Aadan Maalim Cali (Somali), delivered a comprehensive address, emphasizing the significant advancements made in various areas of technology. However, he noted that new terminology had yet to be incorporated into the Somali language: “The objective of this conference is to engage in a deep and thorough discussion on how to develop and enhance technology-related terminology and understanding within our mother tongue. The Ministry has formulated various policies and regulations, and there is an urgent need to identify suitable terminology for modern technology,” said Minister Mohamed Somali.

In his speech, the Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Salah Ahmed Jama, underscored the critical importance of this initiative at this juncture for the nation, stressing the necessity of developing appropriate terminology for technology usage in order to preserve the Somali language and reduce reliance on borrowed foreign terms.

The Technology Terminology Conference in the Somali Language* will continue over the next two days in Mogadishu, with expected outcomes including the introduction of preliminary technological terms that are consistent with the Somali language.
